Indian Govt Bans AliExpress Among 43 Chinese Apps Over Security Concerns

  • The Indian government has banned AliExpress and other 42 Chinese apps over defense and security concerns.
  • On June 29, 2020, The government had banned 59 Chinese applications, including TikTok, UC Browser, and others.

The Indian Government, on Tuesday, has blocked 43 Chinese mobile applications, including AliExpress, Taobao, Snack Video, and 40 others, under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

“The order is issued based on comprehensive reports received from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, Ministry of Home Affairs,” the government said in a statement.

“This action is taken based on the inputs regarding these apps for engaging in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order,” the statement said.

On June 29, The government had first banned a total of 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, UC Browser, and others, over security reasons and geographical tensions with China.

Following, On September 2, 2020, The government banned 118 Chinese apps, including PUBG Mobile and Lite, saying that the apps were prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity, defense of India, and public order.

Till date, The Indian government has blocked a total of 220 China-linked applications, including TikTok, UC Browser, PUBG Mobile, Snack Video, AliExpress, Xender, and others. The ministers have described it as a ‘digital strike’.

While PUBG Mobile is trying hard to make its comeback in the country as it has more than 50% user base from India.

“The government is committed to protecting the interests of citizens and sovereignty and integrity of India on all fronts, and it shall take all possible steps to ensure that,” the Centre said today.

The ban imposed on Chinese applications comes amid the ongoing geographical tensions between India and China.
